Woman Forces Minor Daughter Into Flesh Trade For Money

SHILLONG: A woman forced her minor daughter into prostitution to earn money citing poverty prompting her relatives to file a complaint on Tuesday.
The girl, who is pregnant and admitted in a city hospital, was sexually abused by two men facilitated by the mother.
This was reflected in the FIR lodged at Madanrting police station by the girl’s brother, Lapynkupbor Umsong, and her uncle Korishon Umsong.
The girl hailing from a village under Mawkynrew Block in East Khasi Hills District passed Class VI from a school in the city.
The 16-year-old victim stayed with a relative here and attended school in the morning and helped the relatives during the day along with her elder sister.
Last December after the examinations, the victim, third of the nine siblings, was taken away by her mother, Aitimon Umsong, from Shillong to her village.
She stayed there for two days and the mother took her away to the house of a distant relative in another village about an hour from her native village in Mawkynrew.
According to the relatives, at night she was taken to the house of a youth identified as Shngain Nongrum (22) and the mother compelled her to sleep with him.
When the victim confronted her mother, she was told to keep quiet and her objections went in vain.
The next day, they came back to her village and Lapynkupbor, a daily wage earner working in the Assam-Meghalaya border area, came to know about the incident.
The brother and his uncle filed the FIR on January 12. Police went in search of the accused but since they could not find him, his father was brought to the police station.
On January 16, the accused, the girl and her mother came to the police station. She told the police that her daughter was above 18 years. She had even threatened the girl to tell them she went willingly to the residence of the accused.
However, the brother of the victim produced the Baptismal Certificate that showed her date of birth as December 15, 2001.
No one was arrested in connection with the crime and from the police station, the mother took her to the village of the accused who again sexually exploited her and the next day she was brought back.
The agony continued as the accused came to stay in the girl’s house and though her aged father objected by saying his daughter was a minor, the youth ignored the plea. The father was also chided by his wife.
The relatives said no action was taken against Nongrum and Aitimon though the FIR was lodged on January 12. This prompted the brother and the uncle to file another FIR on Tuesday.
The relatives said following the sexual abuse, the girl became pregnant and after a few months, she was brought to another village in East Khasi Hills by her mother who rented a house.
It was when the girl was assisting her mother in selling betel nuts in Shillong that she collapsed following which she was admitted in Ganesh Das Hospital.
In the hospital, she mentioned her daughter’s age as 22.
The relatives said she was hospitalised for five days and after she was discharged, Aitimon brought another man identified as Hep on August 31.
According to the relatives, Hep entered the bathroom in her rented house and tried to molest her. When she protested and called for help, her mother told her to accept him.
After Hep left, the girl was beaten up for refusal.
The relatives said once the mother locked Hep and the victim in one room but the neighbours tried to rescue her after she cried for help.
The relatives of the victim said it was for money that the mother was forcing her into flesh trade.

Minor becomes a tax payer if her income arises from her skills

My son (15) is a singer and performs at live shows where he gets paid. I want to know how his earnings will be taxed.

—Mohit Bhatnagar

As per section 64(1A) of the Income-tax Act, 1961, clubbing provisions (i.e., income of the minor is clubbed with the income of the parent) would be applicable if the minor (i.e., below the age of 18 years) earns an income.

But these clubbing provisions are not applicable if the income arises or accrues to the minor child on account of activity involving application of his skill.

Since your son earns income by performing at live shows, the income earned shall be taxable in his hands. He will be taxed as a separate taxpayer. The amount received by him for his performances would generally be taxable as income from business or profession. Depending on the income, the applicability of maintaining books of account, tax audits and service tax need to be examined separately.

If I resign from a company after total service of 6 years, kindly confirm if there would be any tax deducted at source (TDS) on withdrawal of my Provident Fund (PF)?

—Nikhil Sharma

The PF withdrawal triggers a tax liability if the same is withdrawn without rendering continuous services with the employer for a period of 5 years or more. But if the accumulated PF balance maintained with the old employer is transferred to the PF account of the current employer, then the period of previous employment is also included as part of continuous service.

As you have already completed more than 5 years of service with your employer, there will not be any tax implications on receipt of the accumulated PF amount in the year of receipt of the amount. Accordingly, there will be no TDS at the time of payment. But you will have to report the PF withdrawal amount in the personal income tax return (ITR) form, to comply with the reporting requirements. The PF withdrawal will be as per the provisions of the Employees’ Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952, which requires you to have a non-employment period of 2 months after leaving your job.

I married in 2016. My wife and I received gifts in the form of cash from relatives and friends, which totalled aroundRs.45,000. Do we have pay tax on it?

—Yash Mehta

Under section 56 of the Act, any sum of money, the aggregate value of which exceeds Rs.50,000 received by an individual during the financial year (FY) without or for inadequate consideration, is taxed under ‘income from other sources’ in the hands of the recipient. But any amount received from specified relatives, or that received on the occasion of marriage, is not taxable in the hands of the recipient.

As the aggregate value of cash received by both of you during

FY17 is on occasion of your marriage, there will not be any tax implication.

Chrome 52 for Linux, Mac, Windows Rolls Out With Improvements, Minor Changes

  • Chrome 52 update roll out starts for desktop versions
  • Brings Material Design to Mac users besides security fixes
  • New update removes Chrome App Launcher completely

Chrome browser version 52 has graduated to the stable channel, and the update is already rolling out to Windows, Mac and Linux users. The Google Chrome update has brought several changes for the browser but most notably it brings along 48 security fixes with itself.

Google, as it promised, has finally removed the Chrome App Launcher that allowed you to launch Chrome apps without opening the browser. However, the launcher will continue to exist inside Chrome OS, reports Venture Beat.

The company had announced in March that Chrome Launcher will retire in July. “With Chrome’s continued emphasis on simplicity and streamlining browser features, the launcher will be removed from those platforms. It will remain unchanged on Chrome OS,” company’s Engineering Director Marc Pawliger said back in March.

If you already have Chrome installed and have not been prompted to install the update, go to Settings > About > Check for updates.

The new update also brings along Material Design to Mac users with redesigned tabs and menus. As of now, there has been no official announcement as to when it will be made available for Windows users. To recall, it was rolled out to Chrome OS 50 back in April. Users uncomfortable with Material Design on their Mac machines can switch back to the older Material Hybrid interface via Chrome flags (http://flags/#top-chrome-md), when in the browser.

Following its announcement in May, the search giant has removed the ability to use the backspace key as a shortcut to navigate to the preview page. With Chrome 52, users can press Alt-Left on Windows or Cmd-Left on Mac to visit the previous page. It also reported that the company is working on an extension to give back the feature to its power users.

The desktop update has already started rolling out but the update for Chrome OS and Chrome onAndroid will come soon.

In April, the company highlighted in a post that there are now 1 billion monthly active Chrome users on mobile.
