Honor Magic 2 With Sliding Camera, FullView Display, Kirin 980 SoC, 40W Magic Charge Support Teased at IFA 2018

Honor showed up at IFA 2018with a surprise this year – Magic 2

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Honor Magic 2 to come with a ‘Magic Slide’ camera
  • The smartphone will be powered by a Kirin 980 SoC
  • Magic 2 also comes with the 40W Magic Charger

Honor is jumping on the sliding camera bandwagon with its Magic 2 smartphone. During its event at IFA 2018 in Berlin, the Huawei sub-brand teased a smartphone called Honor Magic 2 that is claimed to come with a bezel-free display by leveraging a sliding camera functionality. The handset is a successor to the Honor Magic that was launched back in 2016 with display curves and AI-based features. The Magic 2, meanwhile, comes with a ‘Magic Slide’ feature that enables the phone to have a nearly 100 percent screen-to-body ratio.

At the IFA trade show, Honor only showed the Magic 2 briefly onstage. The successor to Magic phone did not get a proper announcement, but Honor President George Zhao teased some of the key features. However, the company did not provide too much information regarding the price, specifications, and availability of the smartphone. A zoomed-in image from Honor’s event shared by GSMArena, showcases the interesting-looking device that lacks any bezels or notches.

The most interesting feature in the Honor Magic 2 is its FullView display. There are no display notches or any significant chin at the bottom. It resembles the Oppo Find X that was launched earlier this year. Xiaomi has also recently teased a Mi Mix 3 with an “all-screen” display that moves the frontal paraphernalia to the slider behind the screen. Interestingly, as per the images, unlike the Find X, the Honor Magic 2’s camera slider appears to open manually. However, it may also be due to it being just an engineering sample and not a final product.

Additionally, the Honor Magic 2 will be powered by a Kirin 980 processor. At the same event, Huawei had launched the HiSilicon Kirin 980 as the ‘world’s first commercial 7nm SoC’. Compared to the previous generation 10nm process, the 7nm process is said to deliver 20 percent improved SoC performance and 40 percent more efficiency. Also, the Honor Magic 2 will come with a 40W ‘Magic Charge’ fastcharging technology. It is claimed to be very fast and safe. Honor, in a press release, said, “to further ensure safety, 15 layers of protection are also embedded in the smartphone. The phone can automatically identify the battery, cable and charger and only when all of the three parts are identified as safe, the Super Charger will start.”

“The launch of Honor Magic two years ago introduced the concept of the AI smartphone to consumers”, noted Zhao. “The first-generation Honor Magic was an era-defining smartphone that transformed the industry. In addition to AI-features that make the phone truly smart, Honor Magic’s ground-breaking all-curved panel design and powerful 40W charging support have reshaped smartphone design and become a benchmark for all smartphones. The developments of these futuristic flagship devices are closely followed by the smartphone and AI industry, and now the Honor Magic 2 has arrived.”

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The poster for the launch event was teased on Weibo
  • Nokia X5 is expected to be dubbed the Nokia 5.1 Plus in global markets
  • It will sport a display notch, dual rear camera setup

Earlier this week, we saw reports suggesting July 11 to be the launch date of the upcoming Nokia X5 aka the Nokia 5.1 Plus. As part of the latest developments, HMD Global licensed brand Nokia has now officially teased the smartphone’s launch that is set for 8pm China time (5:30pm IST) on July 11. The teaser reveals that a new handset in the Nokia X series will be unveiled at the product event, which tips the launch of the rumoured Nokia X5 in China. A live stream will be available for the event. This smartphone will reportedly be called the Nokia 5.1 Plus in international markets.

As per a post on Nokia’s official Weibo account on Monday, a new Nokia X-Series phone is all set to become a reality in China come July 11. Last week, a poster had been spotted on Chinese search engine Baidu that showed off alleged posters of the Nokia X5 in China; the smartphone is expected to get a price tag of CNY 799 (roughly Rs. 8,300) for the 32GB variant and CNY 999 (roughly Rs. 10,400) for the 64GB model. As for design elements, much like the recently launched Nokia X6, even the Nokia X5 will sport a display notch and a bezel-less display. The phone will also get a dual camera setup and a fingerprint sensor at the back.

As for specifications, previous leaks suggest the Nokia X5 will sport a 5.86-inch HD+ (720×1520 pixels) TFT display with a 19:9 aspect ratio. It might be powered by an octa-core SoC, possibly from the MediaTek P series or the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 series. This will be coupled with 3GB/ 4GB/ 6GB of RAM and 32GB/ 64GB of inbuilt storage.

In terms of optics, we can expect the Nokia X5 to sport a vertical dual rear camera setup with a 13-megapixel primary sensor. A 8-megapixel selfie sensor might adorn the front of the smartphone. Connectivity might include 4G LTE, Bluetooth, USB, while battery capacity is set at 3000mAh.

An official post by Nokia had also suggested the company’s two smartphones are in the works for launch later this year, one powered by a Snapdragon 710 SoC and the other by the flagship Snapdragon 845.

Lenovo Z5’s Fully Bezel-Less Display Teased in Sketch

Lenovo Z5's Fully Bezel-Less Display Teased in Sketch

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Lenovo has teased its next flagship
  • It is expected to come as Lenovo Z5
  • The handset appears to have a bezel-less design with no notch

Days after teasing its bezel-less display, Lenovo has now revealed that its upcoming smartphone will debut without featuring a notch cut-out. This will apparently make the new Lenovo model a distinct option in the range of new Android handsets that come with a notch design to match the aesthetics of the iPhone X. Similarly, the absence of the notch on the Lenovo handset makes it a truly bezel-less phone. The smartphone, which is believed to be launched on June 14, is is now confirmed to be called the Lenovo Z5. To recall, the last teaser had confirmed it would sport a 95 percent screen-to-body ratio.

Lenovo VP Chang Cheng has posted a sketch on Weibo that seemingly previews the design of the upcoming smartphone. The sketch reveals that the handset would have come with neither a chin nor a notch – instead, it will be an end-to-end screen on the front, making it a bezel-less smartphone. On the sides, the image released by the Lenovo executive shows some visible antenna lines that are likely to sit on a metal frame. It is unclear whether the back of the handset will come with a glass panel or sport a metal covering. However, the sketch does confirm the name to be Lenovo Z5.

Featuring a bezel-less design means a lot as it would be interesting to see that how the speculated Lenovo Z5 will accumulate the selfie camera, earpiece, and sensors including the ambient light and proximity sensor. The company might use an acoustic ceramic earpiece speaker along with an ultrasonic proximity sensor that both Xiaomi deployed on its original Mi Mix in 2016. Alternatively, the handset could emanate sound directly from its display panel. Companies such as LG and Sharp already deployed such solutions in the past. For capturing selfies, we could presume that Lenovo would use a swivel camera – just like the Vivo Apex, which had a screen-to-body ratio of 91 percent.

Things aren’t all clear about the Lenovo Z5. However, the handset’s existence is all but confirmed as Cheng previously released its teaser and has now posted its sketch. He has also mentioned in the Weibo post that the new model will include four technological breakthroughs and 18 patented technologies.

It appears that we need to wait until June 14 to see what Lenovo has to take on the competition. In the meantime, it is safe to say that some rumours, leaks, and teaser will emerge to detail the new development.

New LG G6 teaser touts water and dust proof capability
LG G6 to pack over 3200mAh battery
The smartphone will be unveiled at an event on February 26
LG has shared another teaser for the G6 flagship smartphone which promotes water and dust proof feature. The new teaser is part of the company’s several teasers that have surfaced on the Internet in past few weeks promoting several features like reliability, integration of an AI assistant on the flagship, and a ‘big screen that fits’.

The latest teaser has been shared with Pocketnow and says “resist more under pressure” which seemingly confirms water and dust proof capability on the LG G6. The teaser image also has a tagline that says “witness the next-generation smartphone brought to you first by LG.” Based on initial leaks and official teasers released by LG, the G6 flagship is widely expected to come with IP68 certification. Though, the new teaser may point to something related to “extra-durable build,” points out Pockenow.

Separately, a South Korean report has claimed that LG G6 will pack a large capacity battery which will be over 15 percent more capacity than the previous LG G5. The report quotes a senior LG executive who said, “The G6 is equipped with a high capacity battery of more than 3200mAh.” The LG G5 came with a 2800mAh battery which was comparatively smaller than 3000mAh on the LG G4.
LG recently announced ‘Preliminary Experiment Group’ for select users in South Korea. Under the company’s group, limited users will receive the G6 later this month ‘free of cost.’ We will have to wait till LG’s February 26 event to see what the company has in stores for consumers.

LG’s G6 flagship smartphone will be unveiled at the company’s February 26 event which will begin at 4.30pm IST (12.00pm CET).
