Facebook Stories Set to Get Ads as User Base Touches 300 Million

Facebook Stories and Messenger Stories now have more than 300 million users, the social networking company announced in post. More importantly, Facebook announced ads are coming to Stories on both its main app and Messenger. This comes about a year after ads were rolled out for Instagram Stories. The company has announced WhatsApp Status, the app’s version of Stories, will be getting ads next year. The Facebook, Messenger and Instagram Stories – along with WhatsApp Status – are clones of Snapchat Stories but have far more users than the pioneer of the feature.

In a post on the Facebook Business page, the company said “To help businesses reach more people, we’re now making Facebook Stories ads available to all advertisers around the world. Soon, you’ll be able to extend the reach [of ads] and improve the performance of your stories ad campaigns in Messenger.”

Facebook Stories ads will support tracking metrics such as reach, brand awareness, video views, app install, conversion, traffic, and lead generation. Brands such as iHeartRadio, Kettle Chips and KFC are among the advertisers who were part of the testing phase for Facebook Stories. The social media company claimed these brands have seen a “lift from their Facebook Stories ad campaigns.”

Citing an Ipsos survey, Facebook said, “More than half of people surveyed said they’re making more online purchases as a result of seeing Stories. In addition, 38 percent of people said that after seeing a product or service in a story they talked to someone about it, and 34% said they went to a store to look for it.”

Twitter Says Removal of Fake Accounts Does Not Hurt User Metrics

Twitter said on Monday it has removed fake accounts but that does not impact its reported user metrics as was indicated in a report by The Washington Post.

The newspaper had said the social media company had suspended more than 70 million fake accounts in May and June, leading to a decline of monthly active users in the second quarter.

“Most accounts we remove are not included in our reported metrics as they have not been active on the platform for 30 days or more, or we catch them at sign up and they are never counted,” CFO Ned Segal tweeted on Monday.

“If we removed 70M accounts from our reported metrics, you would hear directly from us.”

Shares of Twitter fell 9 percent on Monday after a report said the social media company had suspended more than 70 million fake accounts in May and June, which could lead to a decline of monthly active users in the second quarter.

The slump wiped about $3 billion (roughly Rs.20,600 crores) from the microblogging site’s market valuation, which had stood at about $35 billion on Friday. Twitter shares were last down 8.6 percent at $42.62 (roughly Rs. 2,900).

“Such reaction is due likely to the assumption that the lower user count would attract less ad dollars,” Morningstar analyst Ali Mogharabi said.

Mogharabi, however, pointed to big advertisers now paying more attention to the quality content alongside which their ads are placed.

With all the 140-character sentiments being shared online these days, there are bound to be a few that cross over the line and become hateful or otherwise inappropriate. But now, Twitter is trying to do something about it. The social platform just announced plans to slow down abusive accounts and hide abusive tweets from public view.

This isn’t the first time Twitter has had to make adjustments to curb harassment or hate speech on the site. Last year, Twitter rolled out changes that allow users to block certain keywords and conversations from their feeds and report hateful conduct from other users.

But while this latest update is likely a step in the right direction, it probably won’t be the last change Twitter will have to make. Anytime a business like Twitter allows for user-created content, it gives those users the ability to have a big impact on the user experience for others.

So Twitter shouldn’t just let all of that content go unchecked. When certain users get abusive, hateful or otherwise inappropriate, it ruins the experience for everyone else using the site. So even if it’s not something that Twitter itself is doing, it can still lead to a poor experience or even to some users closing their accounts altogether.

The End Goal is Always a Positive User Experience

And since public opinions can vary so widely, that means Twitter will likely have to update its policies and processes constantly so that users have more control over what they see and don’t see. It might seem like a lot of work, but it’s all in the name of creating a positive user experience.

Super Mario Run launched on iOS – Nintendo’s first mobile game
Nintendo on Thursday launched Super Mario Run for the iOS platform, the first game the company has developed for mobile. The game is now available to buy via the App Store for Rs. 620 ($10) and represents a risky bet for the venerable Japanese gaming company. Most mobile game publishers rely on a freemium model nowadays, with super-hits such as Pokemon Go, Candy Crush, Clash of Clans, and Angry Birds all being free to download but featuring in-app purchases. Super Mario Run is now available for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, while the company will release an Android version only next year.

Aircel offers unlimited voice calling packs
Following Airtel, Vodafone, and Idea, now telecom operator Aircel is offering prepaid packs in India with unlimited voice calling. The move, thought to be part of the ripples caused by Reliance Jio’s big splash into the Indian telecom market, sees Aircel offering two packs with voice calling and data benefits. IMDb launches an India-specific website
Just a day after Amazon Prime Video was launched in India, the world’s most popular entertainment database website has unveiled a dedicated page for the country. Found at IMDb.com/india, the page focuses on regional content from across the country, as well as content that is trending in India. While IMDb previously listed Indian content on its site, the company now promises to the offer a larger catalogue alongside more detail and India-specific features.

AirPods battery service chargeable under warranty
After a long delay of roughly two months, Apple earlier this week finally launched the AirPods. Priced at $159 (Rs. 15,400 in India), the AirPods feature batteries both in each ear bud, as well as the charging case. Now, Apple has revealed that even if the AirPods are under warranty, customers will be charged for a battery service. The company instead said that it had already delivered 70,000 units of the smartphone in the country, and that it was working on delivering more.

Amazon completes its first drone delivery
Online retail giant Amazon on Wednesday completed its first drone delivery to a customer. The first delivery – an Amazon Fire TV box and a bag of popcorn – was to a customer in the UK. The company said that the box reached the customer’s house just 13 minutes after the order was placed. The US-based company has in the past complained that the regulatory environment for automated deliveries in its home country is cumbersome.
