JD.com lists the Honor 8X Max with a dummy price tag CNY 9,998 (roughly Rs. 103,000). This is obviously just a dummy price tag, and the exact price will be unveiled at the event next week. Xiaomi Mi 7 and 8th Anniversary Edition Phone Tipped to Launch in May; May Be Called Mi 8 Instead

Xiaomi Mi 7 and 8th Anniversary Edition Phone Tipped to Launch in May; May Be Called Mi 8 Instead

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Mi 7 and 8th-anniversary edition smartphones expected
  • Xiaomi may unveil Mi 8 to align with its anniversary
  • New smartphone may have 3D facial sensing

Chinese mobile maker Xiaomi is expected to launch the successor to its premium Mi 6 smartphone this year. Xiaomi fans were expecting a Mi 7 handset to be launched at MWC 2018, but that did not happen, and the company went on to unveil the Mi Mix 2S in March. However, the latest leaks suggest that Xiaomi will launch the smartphone later this month. Interestingly, reports also suggest that the company either launch two smartphones this year or will reportedly skip its Mi 7 branding to go for just Mi 8.

As per a MyDrivers report, Xiaomi will launch two handsets in May 2018. While one of them is said to be the Xiaomi Mi 7, the other is said to be the firm’s 8th-anniversary edition. The leak claims that the special edition will be the highlight of the launch event. The new smartphone dubbed as the 8th Anniversary Edition phone is rumoured to be unveiled by the end of this month, and it may come with 3D facial recognition feature like the one present in Apple iPhone X. According to the report, it will be the first Android smarphone to feature 3D facial recognition. Similar to the Mi 7, Xiaomi’s 8th Anniversary Edition phone is said to be powered by the Snapdragon 845 coupled with 8 GB of RAM.

Coming to the nomenclature, Mocha RQ, a blogger in China wrote on microblogging site Weibo that Xiaomi will skip the Mi 7 name in favour of Mi 8. Chinese firms are usually obsessed with numbers. It is reminiscent of the time when another Chinese manufacturer OnePlus had skipped a OnePlus 4 smartphone because the number ‘4’ is considered unlucky in China. The blogger explained that Xiaomi wants the name to align with its 8th anniversary. Also, the blogger added that the handset will be announced in May this year.

To recall, another report in April claimed that Xiaomi may, in fact, be one of the first brands to unveil a handset with 3D facial sensing with the launch of the latest Mi flagship. The report had also claimed that Xiaomi’s plans to launch the smartphone with a Snapdragon 845 SoC in the first quarter this year have been delayed. Instead, the smartphone might see an unveiling after the third quarter.

In terms of specifications, the company CEO has already hinted that the Mi 7 will come with an under-display fingerprint sensor. Additionally, reports have suggested that the phone will come with 6GB RAM and Android 8.0.0 Oreo.

OnePlus 6 launch date confirmed for May 18, price tipped at Rs 39,999

Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus will launch its upcoming flagship smartphone OnePlus 6 in India on May 18, Moneycontrol has learnt. The phone will likely cost Rs 39,999.

The upcoming OnePlus phone has been subject to a lot of speculation over the past few months.

The company, whose motto is to ‘Never Settle’, has released various teasers about the upcoming phone’s features under the slogan ‘The speed you need’. Here’s everything we know about the phone so far.

The phone will keep up with the latest design trend in Android smartphones and will sport an iPhone X-like notch at the top and extremely thin bezels on the sides and the bottom. Those who dislike notches will be able to black out the sides of the notches while in the landscape mode.

The company has been on a pursuit to provide its users with ‘burdenless experience’ and has confirmed the phone will be featuring the latest Snapdragon 845 processor along with an 8GB RAM. The confirmation also says the phone will be sporting 256GB storage.

Media reports had speculated that the OnePlus 6 could cost in the early 40 thousands, but a cost of Rs 39,999 would come as a relief to fans of OnePlus that like the phone for its top-end features and competitive pricing.

The company almost confirmed that the phone will be waterproof in the tweet below which says, “Don’t you just hate it when you have to stop using your phone when it rains? So do we”. However, it is unclear whether the phone will be IP67 or IP68 certified.

The slider button on OnePlus devices were traditionally used to shift between volume settings, but on OnePlus 6, the slider can also be used to adjust focus while clicking pictures.

HIGHLIGHTS
New animation tipped to be associated with Google Assistant
The home button turns into four coloured dots in animation
Animation reported to stop working when Google Now is turned off
According to leaks, Google will be introducing a ‘flowery’ new animation to the home button on the onscreen navigation keys with the rumoured new launcher it will ship with the 2016 Nexus phones – something that may make its way to other Android 7.0 Nougat phones as a launcher.
As per the leaked gif image when you long press the home button, it turns into four small dots with the same colours that are associated with Google’s Assistant with a swift animation (seen below), reports Android Police. To further clear any doubts, the site says that its source has confirmed that when the Google Now feature is turned off for the smartphone, the animation goes away.googleassistant_homeanimation_1.gif

Currently the animation makes Google Now on Tap launch, but with Google Assistant still in development and only expected to be launched alongside the new Nexus phones, it remains possible the animation will give you options that tap into Google Assistant instead.

The reports of customisations for the Nexus series (in this case, via the launcher) is in line with Google CEO Sundar Pichai’s statement that the company was planning on getting more opinionated with is Nexus offerings.

There remains the possibility that these changes will make their way to Android 7.0 Nougat, or, that the launcher will work on non-Nexus smartphones. As with any other Nougat 7.0 leak, we can’t say for sure whether this will make Google’s final cut or not but if the company has indeed gone ahead with the development of this animation and wants to promote its Google Assistant feature further.

In other leaks, the search giant is tipped to have changed the colour theme for its ‘settings’ menu to a UI that is dark grey, blue, and white in colour. The night mode has also been suggested to come under the name ‘Night Light’.

The settings tab is suggested to be divided into two sections ‘All’ and ‘Support’ in the latest leaks. This particular change has been suggested to be exclusive to the upcoming Nexus devices.

Another feature “Quick Screen Check”, that has surfaced, will allow the users to check their notifications without waking the phone up fully.
