Paytm Mall Sale, Xiaomi Mi 5X India Launch Date, OnePlus 5's New Skin, and More: Your 360 Daily

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Paytm Mall sale kicked off a day before Flipkart offers and Amazon deals
  • Xiaomi Mi 5X has a dual rear-camera setup
  • OnePlus 5 buyers will now be able to choose a Soft Gold option

Paytm Mall began its Independence Day sale on Tuesday, a day before Flipkart Big Freedom Day Saleand Amazon Great Indian Sale kick off. The Paytm sale will go on for a full week leading into August 15. Discounts and cashback offers are being provided on a range of smartphones, laptops, home appliances, clothing and accessories. As part of the Paytm sale, you can get the iPhone 7 with up to Rs. 8,000 cashback, the iPhone SE at flat 15 percent discount and Rs. 3,000 cashback. The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 is also available as part of the sale.

There are Paytm cashback offers up to Rs. 20,000 on Apple, HP, and Lenovo laptops. If you spend more than Rs. 1,499 during the Paytm Mall sale period, you can enter to win an iPhone 7.

Xiaomi Mi 5X could be on its way to India next month, Mi Note 3 might have QHD display
The Xiaomi Mi 5X looks set to be coming to India in September, judging by a tweet put out by XiaomiIndia MD Manu Kumar Jain. Jain said it’d be Xiaomi’s first dual-camera phone in India, which leaves the 5X as the main contender. It has two 12-megapixel sensors on the back, a f/2.2 wide-angle lens and a f/2.6 telephoto lens. The Xiaomi Mi 5X was launched at CNY 1,499 (roughly Rs. 14,200) in China, so it should cost less than Rs. 20,000 in India.

Meanwhile, a new leak for Xiaomi Mi Note 3 has revealed that the device may come with a 2K (1440×2560) OLED screen developed by Samsung. The phone will also reportedly carry the Snapdragon 835 and have a near bezel-less display, so Xiaomi is clearly gunning for the Galaxy S8.

OnePlus 5 Soft Gold variant made official
OnePlus 5 now has a new limited-edition colour option: Soft Gold. Interestingly, the colour is only available with the lower 6GB/64GB RAM-storage variant – which costs Rs. 32,999 – and will go live on Amazon India and OnePlus’ website on Wednesday, August 9 at 12 am. This new OnePlus 5 colour option can leave buyers in a dilemma of sorts, considering Soft Gold is reserved to lower variant, and Midnight Black is locked to the higher 8GB/128GB option. The only common choice is Slate Gray.

Moto X4, Lenovo K8 Plus, Google Pixel 2 leaks
Lenovo’s upcoming Moto X4 is set to have a unique dual-camera design, judging by the new leaked render shared by Evan Blass. It counters the previous render he shared himself, which he said wasn’t reflective of the final product. In the new one, the two cameras sit side-by-side in a circular housing with the flash support at the top.

In other Lenovo news, the K8 Plus has been spotted on benchmark site Geekbench, ahead of the K8 Note’s launch in India on Wednesday. It runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat, is powered by an octa-core MediaTek Helio P25 chip, and has 3GB RAM.

Lastly, the Google Pixel 2 has shown up in leaked live photos, which suggest wide bezels (ugh) and stereo speakers. A picture of the back shows a single camera and a fingerprint sensor.

Galaxy S8 Active, Samsung U Flex unveiled
Samsung has launched the rugged, more durable version of its flagship – the Galaxy S8 Active – which comes with a shatterproof screen. It can be pre-ordered for $28.34 (roughly Rs. 1,800) per month for two and a half years via AT&T Next, or $849.99 (roughly Rs. 54,100) if you are paying up-front. The Samsung Galaxy S8 Active will be available in US stores this Friday, August 11. There’s no word on when the S8 Active will launch in other countries.

Available in Meteor Grey and Titanium Gold colour variants, the S8 Active has a metal frame and bumper that protects it against shock, abrasion, tilting or twisting. While that’s all well and good, the housing does take away from the bezel-less brilliance of the Infinity Display. The Galaxy S8 Active has passed military specification (MIL-STD-810G) testing, according to Samsung. In terms of specifications, the Galaxy S8 Active is on par with the standard version, except a battery pack that goes up to 4,000mAh.

Alongside, Samsung has also announced a pair of wireless headphones in U Flex, which gets its name from the bendable neckband. The U Flex also has a dedicated button for Samsung’s digital voice assistant Bixby, which can be reconfigured to choose from clock, timer, Samsung Health, or favourites. We don’t have pricing or availability details yet, though those will probably arrive with the launch of Galaxy Note 8 on August 23.

iPhone 8 design leaked again
The next iPhone launch is still over a month away, but the steady stream of leaks has given us multiple new looks at the upcoming models. An image shared by Evan Blass reiterated the bezel-less design we’ve seen before for iPhone 8, which includes a wrap-around display for the front camera, sensors, and earpiece. An image shared on Weibo shows that we might get a new Copper Gold colour with the new iPhone.

Meanwhile, Foxconn VP Luo Zhongsheng allegedly told reporters that the iPhone “will not be cheap” owing to supply chain issues, since yields are low on the new OLED display being provided by Samsung.

SoftBank now in direct talks with Flipkart
After the founders of Snapdeal called off merger talks with Flipkart, its biggest investor SoftBank has begun direct talks with the latter, according to CEO Masayoshi Son. “We respect the decision of Snapdeal founders and we are engaged with Flipkart,” Son said after the Q2 earnings were announced. SoftBank owns 35 percent of Snapdeal and was said to have mediated its sale during the past few months. The Japanese firm is now looking to invest $2 billion in Flipkart.

Disney apps may be spying on your kids
A class-action lawsuit filed in California last week has alleged that 42 apps made by Disney working with three companies – Upsight, Unity, and Kochava – have been collecting personal data on children, and illegally sharing it with advertisers without parental consent. US law prohibits companies from signing up those under the age of 13, as part of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). In a statement, Disney said it has a “robust COPPA compliance” programme and intends to defend itself in court.

LG V30 spotted in video contest entries, launches August 31
LG may have inadvertently revealed the look of its next flagship – the LG V30 – thanks to an online competition in collaboration with Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s HitRecord production company. Entrants are given early access to LG products, and their videos – though not available in high-quality – paint a clear picture of what the V30 will have. The back of the phone has a dual-camera setup, a fingerprint sensor, and the moniker ‘V’ etched below it. The LG V30 is set for its pre-IFA 2017 Berlin launch on August 31.

Google rolls out YouTube’s in-app messaging to everyone
YouTube’s in-app messaging system, which allows you to share videos and chat with your friends and family right in the app itself, is now rolling out globally for both Android and iOS users. Google may have lost the social media battle, but it still owns the world’s largest open video platform, so this new addition may well help keep users on the platform they watch the most. When you tap the Share button, you’ll be able to choose from people with Google accounts. Once you do so, or if someone shares a video with you, those conversations will be available in the Shared tab.

Airtel offers 84GB data for 84 days at Rs. 399 to beat Jio Dhan Dhana Dhan offer
Another week, another plan to counter Reliance Jio. This time it’s Airtel. The company has announced a new plan that offers 84GB of data for 84 days at Rs. 399. Users will get unlimited local and STD calls and 84GB of data, with an FUP of 1GB per day. New iPhone 8, iPhone 7s Plus, and iPhone SE refresh rumours
In the run up to Apple’s yearly iPhone event, a flurry of leaks have given us an idea of what to expect. The latest, derived from the HomePod’s firmware code that was inadvertently made public, has suggested that the iPhone 8’s Face ID recognition system will work even if the phone lies flat. The code contains words ‘resting’ and ‘unlock’. Another leak shows the vertical dual camera alignment of the iPhone 8, and comes from tipster Benjamin Geskin. The smartphone appears to have two camera sensors on the rear panel, with Geskin adding the smaller represents the wide-angle lens, and the larger represents the telephoto lens.

The iPhone 7s Plus could use wireless charging according to dummy images via tipster Sonny Dickson. The dummy is seen to sport a glass back, pointing to the inclusion of the wireless charging feature that’s long been anticipated for the iPhone series.

The iPhone 8 and iPhone 7s Plus aren’t the only phones to see leaks. The budget-focussed iPhone SE may see a refresh early next year according to a report that cites the company’s supply chain. The report adds that India will be the first market to receive the new iPhone SE before it is made available more broadly, and it will be manufactured by Wistron at its Bengaluru facility. The new iPhone SE will reportedly start shipping in the first quarter of next year. Wistron is the same supplier that started assembling current-gen iPhone SE units in the country earlier this year.

Paytm now lets you automatically add money to your wallet, send post cards
Paytm has added postcards on both iOS and Android versions of its app. If you are wondering what these postcards do, they essentially allow you to send money to your loved ones with customisation options and personalised text messages. Alongside, the company also introduced Paytm Automatic, which automatically tops up your Paytm wallet balance. Only available on the Android app at the moment, Paytm Automatic will let users set a particular amount as a minimum balance for the wallet, and also set the recharge amount whenever the balance dips below the minimum. This would essentially top-up the user’s balance whenever it’s running low.

OnePlus 5 OxygenOS 4.5.8 update rollout begins after game stutter issue
The OxygenOS 4.5.8 update for the OnePlus has begun rolling out after the company halted the OxygenOS 4.5.7 update earlier due to a game stutter issue. This new update brings the same changes as the bug-laden update, sans the game stutter issue of course.

In its post on official forum, OnePlus said regarding the OxygenOS 4.5.8 update, “OxygenOS 4.5.7 was withdrawn, we are pushing out the incremental roll-out of OxygenOS 4.5.8 OTA for the OnePlus 5 instead.” To recall, earlier this month, it was reported that OnePlus started rolling out its OxygenOS 4.5.7 update the ability to record videos in 4K resolution with electronic image stabilisation (EIS) on OnePlus 5.

LG Q6 India launch set for Thursday
LG Q6, which is amongst LG’s first Q-Series phones, is coming to India this week. Its exclusive online retail partner Amazon is teasing an August 10 launch while detailing that India will be getting the 3GB RAM + 32GB storage variant. In case you missed all the hype last month, LG’s Q-Series bring a lot of premium features seen in the flagship G-Series in a more affordable package. The LG Q6 variant launching in India also supports dual-SIM cards, and runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat.

Amazon India officially launches ‘Local Finds’
Amazon India has finally made its Local Finds platform open to customers in India. Local Finds is a platform that allows Amazon users in Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Mumbai to find and sell used and new goods to others in their city. Amazon takes care of delivery and payments for Local Finds transactions. The company boasts that customers are adding “hand crafted and rare products” daily. The Bengaluru pilot prior to Local Finds officially launching saw roughly 600 sellers, and up to launch, it has seen 30,000 customers use the service across all four cities.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 to feature in-screen fingerprint sensor: KGI
The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 smartphone will see an under-display fingerprint sensor instead of the Galaxy S9 according to a report from KGI Securities. As per KGI’s report, Samsung doesn’t have to risk the quick implementation of the under-the-display fingerprint scanner with Galaxy S series models as Apple planned to with the iPhone 8. The firm predicts Samsung will place the fingerprint scanner at the rear of the Galaxy S9 flagship models next year, just like it did with Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.

However, in its report, KGI has said that the Galaxy S9 models will come with some other selling points including advanced iris recognition as well as dual cameras. These features have been said to buy the company the time it needs to introduce an under-the-display fingerprint scanner in a manner that’s market-ready.

TRAI calls on speed test apps to understand their methodologies
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is calling major speed test apps for a presentation to “understand” their methodology. This should result in a “paper” that will be made available publicly in the months to come. The sector regulator plans to meet 7-8 mobile Internet speed testing firms, including Ooklaover the next one or two months, in this regard. The move assumes significance as Airtel has used Ookla results in the past to assert itself as fastest network, a claim contested by Reliance Jio. TRAI hopes that its initiative would not only help raise consumer awareness about the various apps and choices available to users but could also lead to improvements in its MySpeed app.

Apple Watch Series 3 said to sport LTE connectivity
Apple is said to be planning to launch a version of the Apple Watch with cellular connectivity. This will reduce its reliance on the iPhone according to those familiar with the matter. Intel will reportedly supply LTE modems for the new watch. Apple is in talks with carriers in the US and Europe. It could choose to debut its new watch models alongside the new iPhone like it did last year.

Disclosure: Paytm’s parent company One97 is an investor in Gadgets 360.

July 20 will also mark Xiaomi’s three-year anniversary in India, and it announced a two-day sale during the Mi Max 2 launch. The hard to buy Redmi 4 and Redmi Note 4 will be in stock during the anniversary sale, alongside new power banks and discounts on accessories. Xiaomi is also bringing back the Re. 1 flash sale, which will be offered on Redmi 4A, Wi-Fi Repeater 2, and the 10000mAh Mi Power Bank 2.

Nokia 8 shows up in all its glory
The Nokia 8 has shown up in leaked press renders, which gives us the first good look at the premium device ahead of its launch on July 31. Expected to cost EUR 589 (about Rs. 43,400), the Nokia 8 is seen to have a vertical dual rear camera setup courtesy of HMD Global’s partnership with Carl Zeiss for optics. Reliance Jio claims it’s the biggest mobile data network in the world
Reliance Jio is now the largest mobile data network in the world, carrying 15 percent of world traffic, the company’s President Devices Sunil Dutt claimed at Xiaomi’s event in New Delhi on Tuesday. Dutt added that Jio is the only exabyte network in the world, and it commands 85 percent of India’s mobile data consumption needs. He also brought up the previously mentioned statistic of data consumed per month, which has apparently gone up from 0.2 billion gigabytes to 1.2 billion gigabytes, with Jio contributing heavily to the rise.

Amazon and Flipkart host laptop sales
With college semesters in full swing, Amazon India and Flipkart are both hosting Back to College sales, providing deals, exchange offers, and No Cost EMI options on a variety of laptops. Amazon has seen fit to categorise laptops by student majors, such as Humanities, Engineering, MBA, and so forth. The cheapest option is Lenovo’s 15.6-inch Ideapad at Rs. 18,990. You can get Rs. 10,000 off on exchanging an old laptop, and two-year warranty for Rs. 1,499.

On Flipkart, the sale will run from July 18-20. You can get the 6th-gen Core i3-equipped HP Imprint for Rs. 35,964, and Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4 has 3-5 percent off. You can get up to Rs. 7,000 on exchange offer with the Imprint, and up to Rs. 20,000 on some gaming laptops.

iPhone 8 power button might house Touch ID, coming in November?
Apple might put Touch ID on the power button with iPhone 8, according to a new report. Owing to that implementation, which was revealed from a design file provided to a case-maker, the power button will apparently be slightly larger on the tenth-anniversary iPhone. The renders also add fuel to the vertical dual rear camera setup fire, along with the removal of the Home button from the front.

A second report reiterates the delay in the phone’s release, owing to the protracted development schedule. Apparently the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus, featuring minor upgrades to last year’s phones, will ship as usual, the iPhone 8 – which is expected to be more expensive – won’t be available until November.

Google Allo brings message reactions to its platform
A new update for Google Allo has added support for message reactions, with a heart emoji being your only option for now. Huawei takes on Fitbit with Band 2 and Band 2 Pro
Huawei unveiled two new fitness trackers on Tuesday – the Band 2 and Band 2 Pro – which look a lot like the Fitbit Charge 2, right down to the dual-tone finish of the metallic centre. But unlike their Fitbit counterpart, the Huawei wearables are waterproof, and the Band 2 Pro has built-in GPS. Two additional features include Firstbeat – which helps assess VO2 max – and Breathing Coach, which is like Fitbit’s Relax and Apple Watch’s Breathe. Compatible with Android 4.4 or later, and iOS 8.0 or above, the Huawei Band 2 and Band 2 Pro will be available in Blue, Black, and Red band colours, though they have no release date or pricing info yet.

Flipkart reportedly ups Snapdeal acquisition offer by $100-150 million
After Snapdeal rejected Flipkart’s $800-850 million initial bid earlier in July, the latter is back with an upgraded buyout offer between $900-950 million, people familiar with the matter told Reuters. The revised offer includes Snapdeal’s marketplace and solutions provider Unicommerce, but excludes logistics arm Vulcan Express, and digital payments firm Freecharge. Infibeam has apparently made a proposal for acquiring Snapdeal as well, and the company is expected to reach a decision in the next 10 days.

Remix OS is no more, as Jide switches lanes
The Android-based Remix OS has been discontinued after its maker Jide decided to switch priorities from consumer to enterprise markets. In a post on its website, the company said that it sees “huge potential” with businesses, and it has decided to focus solely on that going forward. This also affects the all-in-one entertainment device Remix IO, which went up on Kickstarter last year. Jide said that it’d start refunding pre-orders from August 15.
