The new add-on is called No More 404s
It replaces Error 404 with archived snapshots
The add-on is powered by Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine
After introducing a big update for its browser users, Firefox has added some new features to its Test Pilot platform. The most significant is a new add-on called No More 404s that replaces the age-old Error 404 on a missing webpage, with saved archives from the Wayback Machine.

Normally, when presented with a missing link, the browser shows the 404 error. However, Mozilla’s No More 404s add-on will give Firefox users the choice to see old Internet snapshots saved in the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine. This is especially handy for users trying to do research or just dig up some old graves due to curiosity.

For now, this add-on is only available in Firefox’s experimental Test Pilot platform, with no details on availability for regular Firefox users. Interested users can install the test version here. Apart from this, the Test Pilot platform also introduced improved search results through the Awesome Bar, redesigned the Tabs bar to the side, and even tweaked the history feed.

At the beginning of this week, Mozilla began rolling Firefox 48 for its desktop and Android users. The update is significant on desktop because it introduces a new multi-process Firefox feature to ensure less lag and fewer crashes of the browser.
Firefox for Android saw few changes like the Synced Tabs moved to the History panel, Bookmarks and Reading Lists merged together, and also the ability to pause a video playing on the browser when the user receives a call. The update for iOS users came last month with several improvements to the search engine, a redesigned toolbar, and the ability to use less RAM and CPU for increased battery efficiency.

Opera Mini Gets Video Download Support, Highlights India Content on Home Page

Opera Mini Gets Video Download Support, Highlights India Content on Home Page

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Opera Mini partners with Sportskeeda and Bollywood Hungama
  • The new update brings home page redesign only for Indian users
  • The downloaded videos can be stored on internal or external memory

Opera has updated the Opera Mini browser for Android with new features and integrations. This includes India-specific updates on Bollywood and cricket on its home page, alongside the ability to download videos on to the smartphone from the browser.

Opera Mini 18 for Android will show a new entertainment feed on its home page. The browser company has partnered up with Bollywood Hungama for this purpose. It has also partnered with Sportskeeda to give live cricket updates on its home page as well.

The browser maker also enabled a new video download feature in Opera Mini 18 for Android, which will essentially allow users to download videos from social networking and other sites onto their devices from the browser directly. By clicking on the video, a pop-up dialogue box with the option to save the video appears. Users can then hit on the Save button to start downloading the video, or press cancel to just stream it online. This feature has been enabled on many websites like VuClip, Hotstar, Times of India, DjPunjab, Indiamp3, Webmusic, and Djmaza.

Opera notes that the feature only works on video websites without their own integrated media player. Video downloading is essentially useful for users who look to loop videos for whatever reasons, without wasting data. The downloaded videos can be saved onto inbuilt storage or to a microSD card installed in the user’s device.

Opera Mini recently also introduced a new feature called ‘Video Boost’ for its Android users. As the name suggests, the feature would help Opera Mini users “see less of the video-buffering wheel.”

Amazon Unveils ‘Page Flip’ to Help Users Jump Between Pages

Amazon Unveils 'Page Flip' to Help Users Jump Between Pages

HIGHLIGHTS

  • It is available for Kindle E-readers, Fire tablets, and the Kindle app
  • Users can zoom out to find what they’re looking for
  • The page they are reading is pinned for easy retrieval

Amazon on Tuesday introduced Page Flip, a feature that’s designed to tackle a long-standing issue with reading e-books, that is, flipping pages for reference and coming back to where you were.

With the new Amazon Page Flip feature, users can zoom out of the book and look for something specific from a bird’s eye view. The company says users will easily be able to recognise specific pages at a glance, as charts, pictures, bookmarks, and the user’s own highlights are readily visible in the “pixel-accurate thumbnails.”

The page users were reading is automatically pinned at the edge of your screen, so that users can quickly jump back to continue reading.

The new Amazon Page Flip feature will arrive in an over-the-air update for Kindle E-readers, Fire tablets, and the Kindle app for Android and iOS.

“Page Flip makes it easier than ever to refer back to pictures in a political memoir, flip back and forth between a map and your current page in an epic fantasy series, or find passages you’ve highlighted in an investing guide,” Kindle’s Vice President Chuck Moore was quoted as saying in the release.

The company has taken inspiration from how people read print books and tried to improve upon it, he said.

Earlier this month, Amazon launched an upgraded version its entry-level Kindle E-reader – priced at Rs. 5,999. The ebook reader went up for pre-orders in India last week, and will start shipping from July 7.
