Money ‘taken from Cambodian child’ in casting game for Angelina Jolie movie

‘Srey Moch [above, with Jolie] was the only child that stared at the money for a very, very long time,’ the US star, who directed First They Killed My Father, told Vanity Fair. Photograph: Roland Neveu/Netflix

A casting technique used in Angelina Jolie’s new film involved giving money to, then taking it away from an impoverished Cambodian child – who was awarded the part when she became “overwhelmed with emotion”.

Jolie, who is a goodwill ambassador for the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), recounted the method in an interview with Vanity Fair. Her made-for-Netflix film First They Killed My Father, tells the story of life under the regime of Cambodian dictator Pol Pot. According to the article, Jolie looked in “orphanages, circuses and slum schools” for children “who had experienced hardship” to audition for the role of Loung Ung, from whose memoir the film is adapted.

Evgenia Peretz, the article’s author, wrote that the casting directors then “set up a game, disturbing in its realism: they put money on the table and asked the child to think of something she needed the money for, and then [for the child] to snatch it away. The director would pretend to catch the child, and the child would have to come up with a lie.”

“Srey Moch [the girl ultimately chosen for the part] was the only child that stared at the money for a very, very long time,” Jolie told Peretz. “When she was forced to give it back, she became overwhelmed with emotion. All these different things came flooding back.”

“When she was asked later what the money was for, she said her grandfather had died, and they didn’t have enough money for a nice funeral,” Jolie added.

In the interview Jolie also revealed that she was diagnosed last year with Bell’s palsy, which causes temporary paralysis of the facial muscles. Jolie credits acupuncture for helping her to recover from the condition, which had caused one side of her face to droop. “Sometimes women in families put themselves last, until it manifests itself in their own health,” she said of the illness.

Jolie also discussed the surgery she underwent after learning that she had a gene mutation that increases her risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. In 2013 the actor underwent a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery and later wrote about the experience for the New York Times. She has since had her ovaries removed, a decision she says she made after blood tests indicated she might have cancer. When Jolie learnt that she didn’t have cancer, she says, “I dropped to my knees. I went into the actual [ovarian] surgery happy as they come. I was skipping. Because at that point it was just preventative,” she said.

First They Killed My Father will be shown at the Toronto international film festival, and is expected to be released later this year.

Hotstar’s ‘hours before torrents’ Game of Thrones promise fails
Game of Thrones Season 7 claimed its first victim and it wasn’t a character on the show. Indian streaming service Hotstar suffered technical issues ensuring that the series’ rabid fans were unable to watch episode 1 of season 7 of Game of Thrones. Ahead of season 7 of Game of Thrones, Hotstar campaigned pretty aggressively against torrents, promising to get you the episode ahead of the torrents. Ironically, owing to these technical problems, many die-hard fans were forced to fall back on torrents for their GoT fix anyway. In a statement to Gadgets 360, Hotstar confirmed the service faced some problems earlier in the day, but said that it was “fully up now”.

Moto G5S Plus and Xiaomi Mi 5X specifications leaked
The Moto G5S Plus is yet to be announced by Lenovo but that hasn’t stopped yet another leak. It could sport a dual camera setup with a flash beneath it along with a circular metal frame. This is in sharp contrast to the Moto G5 Plus that had a single camera on the back. Other details of the Moto G5S Plus, such as a front flash on top of the display and a home button on the front, are similar to the Moto G5 Plus. A previous leak suggests we could see the Moto G5 Plus sport a Snapdragon 625 SoC with 4GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage.

Also leaked is the Xiaomi Mi 5X. Promotional material for the smartphone made its way to the Internet prior to an official announcement. The Xiaomi Mi 5X design sees it taking inspiration from the iPhone 7 Plus albeit with a Snapdragon 625 SoC and 4GB RAM. It’s rumoured to have a dual camera setup too. The Xiaomi Mi 5X is expected to cost CNY 1,999 (around Rs. 19,000) and may arrive in Black and Gold colour options.

Google Maps now tells you the best time of the day to travel to your destination
Google Maps will now tell you the best time of the day to travel to your destination. Unlike most feature roll-outs for the service, which take awhile to show up across devices, it appears to be already available for Android users. This addition is visible when you search for a destination and ask Google Maps for directions, presenting you with a graph that shows off the duration of your trip as per the time of the day. Don’t expect exact information on the time saved by starting your journey at a particular time though, just a rough estimate. Nonetheless, its better than no data at all.

TRAI to discuss ‘minimum floor price’ with telcos, Aircel’s new 333 pack
The freebies being offered by Reliance Jio and other telco could come to an end. On July 21, TRAI will meet all telecom providers to seek views on a ‘minimum floor price’ for voice and data rates. This comes months after Reliance Jio stormed the telecom market with aggressive data pricing, and saying that voice calls will always be free on its network. With incumbent operators blaming Jio for their financial woes and the industry debt standing at Rs. 4.6 lakh crores, it will be of interest to see how this plays out.

Amidst this, Aircel has announced a new Rs. 333 pack called RC 333 data plan. Described by the company as its ‘best ever’, the Aircel 333 pack provides users with 30GB of 3G data for 30 days with no daily usage limits at Rs. 333. Although announced for the Karnataka region, Aircel customers with 2G, 3G, and 4G handsets can avail of it but will be limited to 3G speeds.

Titanfall: Assault Real-Time Competitive Multiplayer Game Announced for Android, iOS

Titanfall: Assault Real-Time Competitive Multiplayer Game Announced for Android, iOS

South Korean mobile game developer Nexon on Wednesday announced Titanfall: Assault, and upcoming mobile title from the Titanfall series developed by Respawn Entertainment. It is coming to both Android and iOS. While the game will initially be made available as a closed beta, the timeline for wide release of the game has not been revealed by the company.

Titanfall: Assault is a real-time competitive multiplayer mobile game and is being co-developed by Nexon, Respawn Entertainment, and Particle City. “During the closed beta, we’ll be monitoring many aspects of the game and reaching out to the players for their feedback. We’ll also be continuously iterating based on that feedback from the community, as well as fixing bugs and making overall improvements,” Nexon said in its announcement post on Facebook.

In the upcoming Titanfall mobile game, users are required to assemble their squad of Pilots, Titans, and Burn Cards to fight for the Frontier across multiple locations from the Titanfall series, Nexon said. Interested players can already register for the game on its official website.
Notably, Nexon, Respawn, and Particle City earlier collaborated to develop another Titanfall-based mobile game called ‘Frontline’, which was cancelled earlier this year. Hopefully this time around, the companies will be able to release the mobile game to wider audiences after making appropriate changes with the feedback.

In terms of sheer numbers, Titanfall does not enjoy the same playerbase as some of its other first-person shooter competitor games on PC and consoles but it has always maintained a loyal fan-base. Although the upcoming Titanfall Assault doesn’t share the same gameplay mechanics, it will be interesting to see if the mobile game is able to generate same buzz as Titanfall’s first-person shooter games do when they release.
