Apple Clips Video Editing App Gets Animated Overlays With Disney, Pixar Characters

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The version 1.1 update is already available on the App Store
  • The app was launched back in March
  • The update brings some usability improvements as well

In March this year, Apple launched its Clips app that essentially allows users to create videos easily by combining video clips, photos, and music. While the app has not performed exceptionally well on app charts, the Cupertino-based company has now added some Disneyand Pixar magic to make the app more appealing.

With its latest update, version 1.1, Clips has received dozens of new customizable text banners, overlays, and posters that include characters from both Disney and Pixar. This means that users will be able to add animated overlays with Mickey, Minnie, and other characters from movies Toy Story and Inside Out to their videos with the new update.

“Users can now add classic Disney and Pixar characters to their videos. Clips 1.1 features animated overlays of Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck and Daisy Duck,” the company said in its release. Apart from these animated overlays, Disney-designed posters can also be added to the videos as “playful title cards” with the update, Apple says.

Apart from these, with the new update, Clips has now received 10 new Apple-designed overlays and 12 posters with customisable animated text. “From glistening water to slow motion billowing smoke and 3D pop-up art, the new poster designs bring more versatility to iOS video creation,” the company said in the release.

Further, a new button for editing “Live Titles” has been added to the app to make it easier to change captions and titles. The Cupertino-based company has also mentioned some usability improvements in the release but didn’t mention the specific details regarding the same.

Though Apple’s Clips app has not been able to perform well until now, let’s hope Woody will be able to save the day and bring more users to this video editing tool.

Facebook Camera Gets Its Own Animated GIF Image Creator

Facebook Camera Gets Its Own Animated GIF Image Creator

When it comes to communication on social media platforms, animated GIF images are perhaps as important as emojis. These two have in a way managed to carve a language for its own and are at times the preferred form of expression than having to type long sentences. GIF images are already popular on Facebook, which just recently added a GIF option in the comments section. Now, the social networking giant is letting you make your own GIFs with the addition of a GIF mode in Facebook Camera.

The new GIF mode in Facebook Camera was discovered by The Next Web’s Director of Social Media Matt Navarra, who reported seeing a new GIF option on the top of Facebook camera. Notably, the feature was found only on iOS and could not be seen on Android, suggesting that it could be rolling out just for iOS as of now. We couldn’t see the feature on iOS either, which means it is yet to roll out to everyone.

As the feature rolls out, users will find the new GIF option when they swipe right to open camera. TNW’s report says that the GIFs created through the feature are short, lasting only a few seconds, which is pretty much how GIFs are meant to be. You will also be able to use Facebook’s effects and frames that were normally available in the camera. The GIF images you make can be saved to your device, posted on your profile or to your Facebook story.

Facebook last month introduced the GIF option in the comments section as part of the 30th birthday of the GIF format. You can already send GIFs on Messenger and Facebook-owned WhatsApp, but the ability to make your own GIFs now means you’ll have more creative freedom in expressing what you what without having to rely and search through existing GIF images. It also means that you won’t have download third-party apps to make your own GIFs if Facebook is baking the feature right into its app.

New animation tipped to be associated with Google Assistant
The home button turns into four coloured dots in animation
Animation reported to stop working when Google Now is turned off
According to leaks, Google will be introducing a ‘flowery’ new animation to the home button on the onscreen navigation keys with the rumoured new launcher it will ship with the 2016 Nexus phones – something that may make its way to other Android 7.0 Nougat phones as a launcher.
As per the leaked gif image when you long press the home button, it turns into four small dots with the same colours that are associated with Google’s Assistant with a swift animation (seen below), reports Android Police. To further clear any doubts, the site says that its source has confirmed that when the Google Now feature is turned off for the smartphone, the animation goes away.googleassistant_homeanimation_1.gif

Currently the animation makes Google Now on Tap launch, but with Google Assistant still in development and only expected to be launched alongside the new Nexus phones, it remains possible the animation will give you options that tap into Google Assistant instead.

The reports of customisations for the Nexus series (in this case, via the launcher) is in line with Google CEO Sundar Pichai’s statement that the company was planning on getting more opinionated with is Nexus offerings.

There remains the possibility that these changes will make their way to Android 7.0 Nougat, or, that the launcher will work on non-Nexus smartphones. As with any other Nougat 7.0 leak, we can’t say for sure whether this will make Google’s final cut or not but if the company has indeed gone ahead with the development of this animation and wants to promote its Google Assistant feature further.

In other leaks, the search giant is tipped to have changed the colour theme for its ‘settings’ menu to a UI that is dark grey, blue, and white in colour. The night mode has also been suggested to come under the name ‘Night Light’.

The settings tab is suggested to be divided into two sections ‘All’ and ‘Support’ in the latest leaks. This particular change has been suggested to be exclusive to the upcoming Nexus devices.

Another feature “Quick Screen Check”, that has surfaced, will allow the users to check their notifications without waking the phone up fully.
