Honor 9i First Impressions: Will It Leave a Mark in Sub-Rs. 20,000 Segment?

Honor 9i is the latest sub-Rs. 20,000 entrant to hit the Indian market, relying on features such as its four cameras, and bezel-less FullVision display. The company has been expanding aggressively in India, launching a handset for each key price point, such as the Honor 8 Pro in the sub-Rs. 30,000 segment. So, with the Honor 9i in its portfolio, will the Huawei-owned brand have enough firepower to make a last mark in the segment, which is dominated by the likes of Vivo, Oppo and Samsung? Find out in our Honor 9i first impressions.

 

With the 9i, Honor has a lot of firsts. For starters, this is the first device from the company to sport an 18:9 FullView display. It is also the first to launch with dual cameras at the back as well as the front. So how good is it in the real world? We got to spend some time with the Honor 9i at the company’s launch event and here are our first impressions.

The device looks quite premium. It also feels solid and has a good heft to it. There’s a 13-megapixel primary camera along with a 2-megapixel secondary one on the front, while the pair on the rear consist of a 16-megapixel sensor and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The camera bump on the back is positioned in the centre of the phone and protrude slightly. While it does seem to have a raised metal trim around it, we are curious to see how it holds up with regular use.

Power the device on and the big 5.9-inch display fires up giving you the first indication of how thin the borders around it are. Honor has followed the current market trend and opted for an 18:9 aspect ratio for its display. The different aspect ratio results in what’s called FHD+ resolution which is 1080×2160 pixels. At the bottom of the phone, you’ll find an old-style Micro-USB port and a 3.5mm headphone jack along with the loudspeaker. Powering the Honor 9i is Huawei’sown Kirin 659 which is an octa-core processor. There is also 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage which seems to be in line with similarly priced devices like the Xiaomi Mi A1 and the Moto G5S Plus. You do get the option to expand storage using the hybrid dual-SIM slot, at the cost of a second SIM.

Honor has managed to cram in a 3340mAh battery which is good considering its thickness. In our brief time with the Honor 9i, it didn’t exhibit any abnormal drain or heating issues. However, we’ll hold our comments on battery life till we run it through our full review process.

Once powered on, you are treated to EMUI 5.1 running on top of Android 7.0 Nougat. While the basic functionality of the OS is the same, Honor has added a few features.

There are multiple gestures and shortcuts that can be used to get things done. Also, the higher resolution means that most apps will need to be stretched to make use of the entire screen.

There is no doubt that the cameras are the highlight of this smartphone. With dual cameras on both sides, Honor is claiming that it is using hardware to create bokeh effects rather than software, which most other manufacturers use. We will test how much of a difference this makes when we conduct our full review.

Priced at Rs. 17,999, it does seem that this phone offers good hardware. With an 18:9 display and four cameras, the Honor 9i could tempt a lot of buyers looking for new features to play with. Stay tuned for our review to see how well it performs in the real world.

Coolpad may launch Cool Play 6 with 6GB of RAM in India on August 20

Coolpad is all set to unveil the Cool Play 6 in India on August 20. The smartphone was launched in China back in May for a price of 1,499 Yuan which roughly translates to around Rs 15,000. The smartphone was heavily marketed as a gaming smartphone in China and was launched in two color options – namely Soft Gold and Black.

Coolpad has been teasing the launch of the Play 6 on its Facebook page with the tagline “Livetoplay” and posts such as “6 is not just a number anymore! It is a new era and new benchmark. Monster is all set for 20th Aug. The thrilling power, the invincible. Stay tuned to know more. #LiveToPlay”.

The Play 6 is set to compete with the likes of the Moto G5 Plus and Xiaomi Redmi Note 4. It comes with a metal unibody design, a dual camera setup at the rear, the latest version of Android and fairly high end hardware for the price.

The Play 6 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 653 processor paired with 6GB of RAM and a 4,060mAh battery that the company claims can deliver 252 hours of standby time, 9 hours of internet browsing, 8 hours of video watching and 6 hours of gaming.

Additionally, the Play 6 comes with a 5.5-inch Full HD display with a resolution of 1080 x1920, 64GB of internal storage expandable via a miscroSD card, a rear mounted fingerprint scanner and a USB Type C port for charging and data transfer. It supports 4G LTE, dualSIMs, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS.

On the imaging front, the Cool Play 6 comes with a dual camera setup at the rear – a primary 13MP RGB (color) sensor paired with a secondary 13MP monochrome (black and white) sensor with a dual-LED flash. Both sensors have an aperture of f/2.0. The secondary sensor allows for the capture of images with depth of field information. On the front, there is an 8MP sensor with an aperture of f/2.2 for selfies.

Apple on Thursday announced that the New Year’s Day 2017 was the biggest day ever for the App Store, with nearly $240 million (approximately Rs. 1,630 crores) in purchases worldwide on that day alone. That hints at robust sales of Apple devices during the crucial October to December quarter, ahead of Apple’s earnings call later this month.

The Cupertino giant also announced that developers earned over $20 billion (approximately Rs. 1,35,895 crores) in 2016, up over 40 percent from the year before. Holiday spend was also at record levels, Apple said, with purchases from the App Store topping $3 billion (approximately Rs. 20,381 crores) in December.

“2016 was a record-shattering year for the App Store, generating $20 billion for developers, and 2017 is off to a great start with Jan. 1 as the single biggest day ever on the App Store,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing. “We want to thank our entire developer community for the many innovative apps they have created – which together with our products – help to truly enrich people’s lives.”

Apple also announced that since the App Store launched in 2008, developers have earned over $60 billion (approximately Rs. 4,07,687 crores) across iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and Mac platforms. Since Apple keeps 30 percent of most App Store revenue, passing on the rest to the developers, that means lifetime sales on the App Store have now topped $85 billion (approximately Rs. 5,77,515 crores). China App Store revenue in 2016 saw ‘record’ 90 percent year-over-year growth.
The App Store offers 2.2 million apps in total, up over 20 percent from last year, and is available in 155 countries. iPhone and iPad customers grew the App Store’s subscription billings significantly in 2016, to $2.7 billion (approximately Rs. 18,347 crores), up 74 percent from 2015.

Apple also announced that since iOS 10 launched in September, developers have shipped over 21,000 iMessage apps to send stickers and collaborate with friends.

Analytics firm Flurry estimated that Apple accounted for 44 percent of device activations during the holiday period, a healthy figure, but down slightly over the previous two years.
